The Canadian Government provides an opportunity to all Indian students to study in the country but as a prerequisite, you’ll have to obtain a Study Permit and a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).
The study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) in Canada. A study permit is not a visa. It doesn’t let an individual enter Canada. A study permit is usually valid for the length of the individual’s study program, plus an extra 90 days.
It is possible to work in Canada, under the Citizenship and immigration Canada (CIC’s) work programs for students. An international student may be able to work in Canada during the course of study under the following categories:
- 1. Working for up to 20 hours per week during regular academic sessions.
- 2. Working full time during scheduled breaks (winter and summer holidays or spring break).
- 3. In-case a student is indulged in Co-op and Internship Programs, where work experience is part of the curriculum supported by a Work Permit.
International students who complete post-secondary education in Canada have many opportunities to extend their stay and ultimately transition to permanent residence.
Pursuing education in Canada may put a student at an advantage when it comes to obtaining a Canadian permanent residence. Many federal and provincial immigration programs value candidates with Canadian education and work experience.
After completing education in Canada, an individual can get Canadian work experience by obtaining a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) which, depending on the Canadian academic program, may enable working in Canada for up to three years.
